Latent Semantic Indexing

Submitted by: Carmine Hjort

LSI, or latent semantic indexing, is what all the search engines use these days. It is a new type of indexing that weights key words as well as related key words. Latent semantic indexing is a good way for Google or another search engine to index documents because it makes sure the documents that come up in a search are meaningful for the key word. Latent semantic indexing results in more helpful documents for the person who submitted the search engine query.

Google and other search engines used to not use latent semantic indexing for their search. The documents with the strongest key words matches would resulting in higher indexing. Because latent semantic indexing wasn’t being used, all the document had to have was a high key word count. Information in the document didn’t matter and the query and search was nearly pointless. But now, using latent semantic indexing a search engine can use not only key words but related key words to rank documents in a search return and the documents can actually have pertinence to the key word subject.

Latent semantic indexing is the best way to provide good search results for a search query. A search engine like Google is using latent semantic indexing and you can easily and quickly find the information you need. Everyone uses Google, and Google uses latent semantic indexing. A search engine goes through a lot of documents online and then searches them for a key word count to see how its analysis is compared to other documents with the same key word. The higher the key word count, the better, before latent semantic indexing. But now a search engine will take into account other factors. How many LSI terms, or related key words, the document has is also very important when the search engine is indexing documents.

Latent semantic indexing is a great tool for search engines like Google who try to provide good information for the world. But marketing people need to know how to make their website or documents show up with a higher rating to the search engine. Just filling a document with key words doesn’t trick latent semantic indexing. You have to write relevant articles that pertain to the topic of the website, with plenty of related key words. Then you website and documents can show higher on a search engine query.

It is really genius how latent semantic indexing goes through a document and counts how many hits there are of each word. That analysis is then reported back to the search engine so that it can show results to the person who had the query. The more key words, the better. But that’s not all. You have to have related key words at a high count as well for latent semantic indexing to choose the document.

Latent semantic indexing, or LSI, is used by many search engines, and even Google so marketing had better know that key words aren’t the only words that count in a document anymore.
